  In the context of electricity, an atom is the basic building block of matter. It is the smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element. Atoms consist of three main subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom. They determine the element's identity as each element has a unique number of protons in its nucleus. For example, hydrogen atoms have one proton, carbon atoms have six protons, and so on. Neutrons are particles found in the nucleus as well, but they carry no charge. They are responsible for stabilizing the nucleus by balancing the repulsive forces between protons. The number of neutrons in an atom can vary, resulting in different isotopes of the same element. Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in specific energy levels or shells.
